Another inspirational answer to the question you raised.  I read this recently in a book by Rabbi Dovid Goldwasser.  He quotes the Kotzker Rebbe saying that when the Maccabees entered the Beit Hamikdash, all they could see was desolation and destruction. Every last pure jar of oil seemed to have been destroyed or defiled.  The fact that the Chashmonaim did not give up hope, and started to search desperately for pure oil, was a miracle in itself!  A Jew never gives up!

I think there is a way to sort of modify a lesson from such Tanach stories. We live in a very different time and we need to understand that some lessons from the Tanach are maybe not meant to be taken literally. Maybe from the story of Chana and her seven sons we can teach our children the importance of standing up for out Judaism.

there was s/th special about this CHANUKAH.
we are living in scary times and the concept
of the weak winning over the mighty was the
reminder I needed of where our strength lies.
Our torah and tefilah are literallysophisticated
    weapons.

very good point.  The message of Chanuka is very relevant to our daily struggles.  YThe battle of spirituality over materialism seems to be getting more and more difficult.  Only through our work in spiritual areas, like Totah and tefillah, will we 'B'ezras Hashem prevail.
