I was very much impressed by the story of how the Steipler ended up in the Russian army. One would have thought that since he was with a group of people the question of yichud would not be so severe. In addition, there was the factor of danger to life.  I think here lies the point which makes one person turn into a gadol and another stay a simple person. Serving Hashem beyond the letter of the law and trying with all ones abilities to stay far from the parameters of sin.
