How does one overcome the natural tendency to be indolent and not achieve ones true potential?

I think the first step is asei tov...just living in the present and doing good without thinking too much about the past or future. Thinking too much about ones past misdeeds can lead to depression and thinking about the future is wasteful as the future is in Hashem's hands anyway...

I think people always look for a payoff.  For example, if a person wants to strive to be an eved Hashem, then they will push past their natural tendency to procrastinate or be lazy as they realize there is a payoff which is greater than their indolence.  The same is true for any activity.  If someone has a goal that they think is important, they will push themselves to achieve it because of the outcome even if getting there is a lot of work.
