My understanding of "atonement" is making amends for something that a person has done wrong. I don't understand how death can be an atonement because you have to submit to Hashem's will completely. A person doesn't have a choice - they're going to die. You don't choose to submit to Hashem's Will - it just happens because you die. Unless atonement is something that is forced on a person, but I think of it more as teshuva in that we choose to atone for a wrong-doing.
