It is very important to appreciate all that Hashem does for us every minute of everyday.  Usually you don't appreciate things until suddenly you lose them.  For example, if you hurt your arm, you suddenly realize how many things you cannot do without the use of that arm.  I never thought about being thankful to someone or something for making me more aware of Hashem when I experience a loss.

I always understood the "having Hakaras Hatov to the water" as not for the sake of the water or any inanimate object, but rather to increase our own sensitivity. Mrs. Smiles so eloquently expressed how our Hakaras Hatov toward inanimate objects is also for the sake of the object i.e., what the object represents- the pure fufillment of Hashem's will.
