We have been told that we are now living in the Gulos of Edom.  Eisav was called Edom and his personality is what we see expressed in western society.  That being the emphasis on things external and superficial.  The superficial never satisfies us and people always need more.  This is a great lesson for all of us.

My father discouraged us from referring to food by color (e.g., "Please pass the red..."), as it is an "Esav" way of speaking. As Rebbetzin Smiles expresses, the small things we do influence us- Adam Nifal K'Fi Peulosav. Thus, it was a heightened sensitivity of keeping a safe distance from all things Esav and (therefore) superficial.
