Yosef was able to spiritually  survive those 22 years because of Yaakov's prayers.  Rabbi Kellman taught us that anyone who is responsible for others is obliged to pray for them.   A rabbi must pray for his community - a teacher must pray for her students - and parent must pray for his children.   This is to keep the spiritual connection alive - to ensure that the parent can still spiritually influence his child.
What if a person's parents never prayed for him?   What if it was never in a person's mindset to pray for his children?   How can these children get this same spiritual protection without the parents' prayer?
