It seems that Dan's tafkid is to fight the evil of Eisav - being in the north and dealing with the darkness.  Wasn't Yosef the one who had the spiritual strength to combat Eisav?  What is the difference?

It is interesting that Moshe Rabbeinu's not going into Eretz Yisrael makes his years of avoda more lishma, eventhough he had no intention of that being a "payment".
