Clearly this subject has a tremendous amount of depth and complexity, and can't be answered on one foot.
A woman is supposed to be an ezer Knegdo. She is the supporting role that allows the confidence of the husband to be able to productive in this world. Chazal tell us that "Isha Keshera Osa Retzon Ba'ala." A proper woman listens to the will of her husband. The Lubavitcher Rebbe aside fromt the literal explanation, adds that she is the one who is osah, makes her husband's will. THIS is the driver's seat role without necessarily being in the driver seat.
