Consider the halachic decisions brought up in the shiur and the philosophy behind the two very different halachic decisions of the authorities?
Can you find any parallel to these different halachic decisions in other periods of Jewish History?

While Jewish History is replete with the suffering of Jews, I don't think there has been any parallel to the Holocaust. It is said that Hashem gives each generation the leaders it needs to address its particular problems.  It seems the leaders of the Jews during the Holocaust were given extra siyata d'shmaya to render decisions according to specific circumstances and conditions.
